Detoxification

Detoxification helps to promote the long term health of the liver and body by strengthening the liver to help it more efficiently process and flush out incoming toxic materials from the body.
Toxins are rampant in our society these days - especially after the holidays when most of us have over indulged in holiday spirits, eaten rich processed foods laden with artificial ingredients, food colorings and synthetic flavorings.  We can take responsibility for minimizing our exposure to toxins by incorporating the following steps into our daily routine:

1.  Purify the home and work  environment.

Remove toxic materials such as stored chemicals, dyes, paints, glues, or insecticides that are often found collecting in garages and under kitchen sinks. If these cannot be removed, always wear protective gloves and breathing masks when using.Replace air conditioning and heating filters often.

2. Eat a diet rich in fresh, wholesome foods.

Avoid excess fat, refined sugar and foods that are laden with preservatives  and artificial ingredients. Add organic foods whenever possible and drink at least 8  8oz glasses of purified water daily.

3.  Add a good liver support product to your vitamin regimen periodically.

Since it is impossible to avoid all toxins completely, a good combination formula of herbs and vitamins designed specifically for liver support may be helpful. There are a variety of quality products available in powder, tablet or capsule form. It's a great way to start the New Year!

We recommend Natural Factors LG formula. Mention this article and save 20%  until Jan 31, 1999!

Favorite customer
ideas on using essential oils:

The following are ideas our customers have shared with us regarding the use of essential oils -

Diffusers are great to put into the study  areas for children and teens doing homework. Favorite scents are citrus oils, Peppermint and Tisserand's Master Blend-Energy. A blend of grapefruit and ginger is also a favorite.

To relax and calm down after a hectic day, use soothing, relaxing scents in a diffuser. Recommended favorites include lavendar and geranium blended, palmarosa, bergamot and sandalwood blended, chamomile and sandalwood blended or theTisserand Master Blend - Serenity. Try the blends or the oils by  themselves.

Many professionals, such as attorneys and accountants have been pleased with the use of the diffusers in their offices, especially  during long, intense meetings.

Diffusers are not the same and we highly recommend the Aroma-Stream Diffuser. It is quiet, clean and economical to use.  No messy cleaning, easy to fill and has two speeds.  Many people travel with them - they're lightweight and help perk up musky hotel rooms.  Ask us about the Aroma-Stream next time you visit our store!

Bath Ideas:

Essential oils can be poured into a hot steaming bath for therapeutic benefits. Favorite recommendations after a hard day at work include pouring a few drops of sage and lavendar in the bath and relax for 10 minutes. Upon drying, add a few drops to a creamy, luxurious lotion and smooth over the skin.

Congested with a winter cold or flu?  Add eucalytus and lemon to the tub.  While soaking, place cloth over face and breath in to help open nasal passageways.

Wish to select an oil for specific use?
The following is a guide to oils and their uses:

Basil:

This revitalizing oil is highly effective in treating migraines, aches, pains and mental fatigue as well as colds and respiratory ailments.  It has a slight licorice scent.

Marjoram:
Marjoram is a spicy, warming oil, useful for tired muscles. It is relaxing and comforting to the emotions and body.  It is   often mixed with other scents.

Ginger:
With its warm, spicy aroma, ginger is useful in massage blends as a fortifying tonic for tired muscles.

Myrrh:
A soothing oil with astringent properties. Myrrh is excellent for various skin conditions, particularly for mature skin and deep healing. Its unusual aroma is smoky and musky.

Petitgrain:
Petitgrain has a delicate, woody aroma and is a refreshing deodorant.  Having astringent properties, it is frequently used as an ingredient in skin care.

To use oils in massage and skincare, oils should be diluted to a 2% dilution. To create the recommended 2% dilution, add 10-14 drops of essential oil or combination of oils to 1oz of base oil or lotion. Shake well before each use.

Health Tips

With the new year past, people are now feeling the effects of holiday parties, extra foods, longer days with less rest and for many, stress and anxiety. As the new year rolls in, people feel motivated to "once and for all" get on the right track to good health and wellness. The health clubs are always crowded, and new diets are put into effect.
Although diet and exercise are critical to wellness, good health also depends upon the vitamins and nutrients in your daily diet. We're asked daily which supplements are best, why should some be taken while others not, etc. With the wide variety of supplements available, it can be confusing when selecting the ones most beneficial for your specific needs. The following is a simple list of additional supplements recommended by our pharmacist, Robert Hoye. He recommends rotating them, as outlined. When implemented, this program should help you  gain and maintain  that edge of good health and wellness without breaking your budget or overloading on the number of supplements consumed daily. The program is designed to nourish different parts of the body throughout the year, while allowing you to experience different supplements and their effect on you. You may modify or add to it as you wish - with time, you will find the regimen that works best for you.

Each month the basic big four regimen should be followed - this includes:

  • a daily multi vitamin,
  • an essential fatty acid (flax seed oil, EPA-DHA fish oil etc.),
  • a probiotic for intestinal health (acidophilus, bifidus, FOS, etc.)
  • and an additional antioxidant for smokers or those who work around heavy toxins, chemicals or insecticides.
Beyond that, many people supplement with additional vitamins and minerals, such as C, E  or zinc - depending on how potent their multiple is. You may add to the big four as you feel comfortable.

From there, we begin our calendar of body nourishing:

January
Detox, Colon and Liver Cleanse:
Choose from our selection of intestinal cleansing products. These help remove toxins and fats from holidays and keep the intestines and immune system healthy.
Combine this with our Ultra Meal Shake Program - designed to help  shed unwanted holiday pounds and introduce healthy, low fat eating habits back into the daily regimen. Especially useful when detoxing, and offers a easy to follow meal program of fresh foods that are easy and healthy to prepare.

In addition, it is used as an antioxidant to help prevent age-related declines in brain function. Use for 60 days.  Do not use if you are taking Coumadin.
Phosphatidylserine (PS): In 17 double blind trials using PS, results showed improved brain electrical rhythms and reversal of age related memory decline, a decrease in anxiety and depression and an improvement in learning, concentration and word skills.  Recommended dosage is 100mg three times daily.

Vitamin Questions
Commonly Asked. . .

What is the difference between a One Per Day Multi versus a Six Per Day?

A commonly asked question regarding vitamins is why do so many multiple vitamins require 3-6 capsules or tablets daily and isn't a one per day just as good?
One per day  multiples focus primarily on B-complex vitamins, usually with a decent level of vitamins A and D. The rest of the formula, including vitamins C and E and the minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and zinc often tend to be a lower potency.

How many tablets or capsules are required to get adequate dosing?

In general, it takes about six tablets or capsules to fit all that is in the one per day plus 500-1000 mg of calcium, 250-500mg of magnesium, 400-1,000 mg of C and 200-400 mg of vitamin E.  With this number of vitamins, it is recommended to spread the dose out over an entire day instead of taking them all at one sitting. Many people take 2-3 at one time, twice daily.

Which is better - capsule or tablet?  Are chewables ok?

Both forms are used in multiple vitamins and both are acceptable.  Depending upon personal preferences and manufacturing processes, vitamins should be taken in whatever form best suits you. Tablets that are properly made do dissolve readily in the stomach. Some tablets may give off an odor especially with the B vitamins reacting with other ingredients. Many people prefer capsules, since they generally are easier to swallow and do not have any smell or  odor to them.
To make the taste acceptable, chewable vitamins usually contain high amounts of sugar or artificial sweeteners, like aspartame or saccharin. When using chewable's consideration must be made regarding the benefits received and the individual situation - Read the labels carefully and weigh the benefits of  having a daily array of vitamins and minerals with sugar versus not having adequate supplementation - especially for children as their bodies and bones are growing.

What about ingredients "competing" with each other and minimizing or wiping out their benefits? Would it be better to take each nutrient separately?

While it is true that certain nutrients compete with each other for absorption, this is also the case when the nutrients are supplied in food. It is known, for example, that magnesium, zinc, and calcium compete for absorption; copper and zinc also compete. However, the body is designed to cope with this problem, and taking many different pills at different times is awkward and most  people are not willing to do it. Although taking them together may not be the "perfect" scenario, it is better than not taking the vitamins at all.

Probiotics
The world of acidophilus.

Probiotics, the world of friendly beneficial bacteria, are used to boost the immune system and inhibit the growth of harmful pathogens. Due to the number of heavy toxins we ingest daily, (consider air pollution, chlorinated water, processed foods and the use of antibiotics and other medications), most people can benefit by adding a good probiotic to their daily vitamin regimen.
     How does a probiotic help?
The human gastrointestinal tract is between 20-30 feet long and contains between five and 15 pounds of bacteria. More than 400 different bacteria are recognized as being native to the human intestinal tract.  In  a healthy gut, there is an adequate balance between the good and bad bacteria, however, lifestyle factors can often compromise the balance by overproducing bad bacteria. When the good bacteria decrease and bad bacteria increase, a variety of health disorders such as yeast infections, acne, digestive problems and food allergies can occur.
Probiotics have been used for many years to maintain a healthy balance of good bacteria in the gut. Probiotics are available in various forms, including capsules, powders and foods.  Foods such as yogurts and miso contain the friendly bacteria.
The word "Probiotic" means "for life" and probiotics are divided into categories known as "genera". The most commonly used friendly genera include:

Lactobacilli.
The genus includes

  • acidophilus,
  • rhamnosus,
  • plantarum,
  • casei,
  • bulgaricus,
  • and L. lactis.
Of this category,
  • acidophilus and
  • bulgaricus are most popular.
Bifidobacteria.
This category includes more than 30 species. Most commonly used are B. longum, B. breve, B. bifidum, B. adolescentis and B. infantis.

In addition to preventing the overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gut, some probiotics are also instrumental in producing enzymes to digest milk sugars, proteins and fats. Certain forms of lactobacilli help the body produce a natural antibiotic called acidophilin that inhibits pathogenic bacteria including E. coli, salmonella, listeria and clostridium. Probiotics also aid the body in manufacturing and synthesizing certain vitamins and other nutrients.
Often, manufacturers will add other support compounds such as FOS (fructooligosaccharides) to their formula's. These compounds work to encourage friendly bacteria growth by providing  host foods and immunoglobulin compounds to reduce the growth of harmful bacteria.    Supplementing with a combination product of different friendly strains may assist the body in a variety of helpful ways. Many different formula's are available for your selection.
The most popular form of products are capsules or powder.  Generally, most products are advised to be kept refrigerated - or at least very cool, as high temperatures can kill off the live bacteria.
Probiotics can be used by all family members, including infants and seniors.

Attention Deficit
Disorder Linked to
Deficiency in Omega -3
Fatty Acids

by Jade Beutler, R.C.P.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)is the most common behavioral disorder in children, affecting between 3% and 5%of school age youngsters. The affliction is more common with boys than with girls.  Purdue University researchers have found that boys with low blood levels of essential Omega-3 fatty acids have a greater tendency to have problems with behavior, learning and health consistent with attention deficit disorder. Children with ADHD typically exhibit symptoms typical of Omega-3 deficiency including: thirst, frequent urination and dry skin and hair. JohBurgess, assistant professor of foods and nutrition for Purdue University, says boys with lower levels of Omega-3 fatty acids scored higher in the frequency of behavioral problems. Burgess adds, "With our research we are tying to find potential causes of ADHD so that nutritional treatments can be developed for some children with ADHD." Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish and other sea foods. The highest known source of Omega-3 is found in flaxseed oil at a whopping 55% by weight.
